This hand colored glass slide is an ORIGINAL and it is NOT a reproduction. It was created to be projected onto the movie theatre screen before the film was released to promote the "coming attraction". Some people in the movie collectible world have said, that, glass slides are much rarer than the paper poster memorabilia from the same film and are very rare pieces of film history.
Format:
Glass Slide: 3 1/4" x 4"
Plot Summary:
Charles Engle has been caught embezzling. He writes a suicide note, and goes out wandering on the town. Small-time hustler Bill O'Brian sees him give a couple of big tips, figures he's rich, and plans to take him over to a big-time card game and fleece him. He enlists Nina Barone to help get Engle to the game. She goes along, but is more interested in O'Brien than in his schemes. Meanwhile, a perpetually drunk and none too successful playwright, Gene Gibbons, finds the suicide note. He cooks up a scheme (with the reluctant aid of O'Brien) to get the money Engle needs to pay back his employer and save his life.
Trivia
:
Fairbanks Jr. co-produced, helping persuade Harry Cohn of Columbia to finance. Cohn gave them Rita Hayworth, in her first leading role in an "A" picture. "Cohn couldn't figure out what the picture was about but neither could we," said Fairbanks Jr.
The working title for this film was Before I Die.
Jean Arthur was offered the role of Nina Barone, but turned it down.
The tagline on the original movie poster - "A HECTIC ROMANCE TO BLOW THE FUSES OUT ALONG MAZDA LANE" - refers to the Broadway theater district in New York City as "Mazda Lane." Mazda was a brand of light bulbs common in the first half of the 20th century, with a name referencing an ancient Persian god of light and good. Broadway was and is known for its brightly lit marquees, and had many nicknames in its heyday.
Walter Baldwin (Rennick) and Stanley Brown (Master of Ceremonies) are listed by a modern source as cast members for those roles, but they did not appear or were not identifiable in the movie.
Ben Hecht, who co-directed (with cinematographer Lee Garmes), co-produced and wrote the screenplay, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

More Info on Douglas Fairbanks Jr:
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. was a major leading actor from the 1910s to the 1980s. He was the son of famous silent star Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. Some of his movies include: The Prisoner of Zenda,
Gunga Din
, Parachute Jumper, Little Caesar,

and A Woman of Affairs. He was married to Joan Crawford from 1929 to 1934, and went on to marry two more times. He passed away in 2000 at the age of 90.
More Info on Rita Hayworth
:
Rita Hayworth was born in 1918. During the early 1940s she was one of the greatest sex symbols the movies has ever had, most notably in the 1946 movie,
Gilda
. But she was born Margarita Cansino, and was originally a child dancer with her father. She later caught the attention of Harry Cohn at Columbia, who cast her as a sexy dancer in some late 1930s movies, first billing her as Rita Cansino, and then renaming her to Hayworth (her mother's maiden name). Cohn did all he could to get rid of her Spanish ethnicity, changing her name, having her dye her black hair red, and having her hairline raised! She made many memorable dance movies (including ones opposite both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly!), but she is probably best remembered for her five steamy melodramas opposite Glenn Ford. She had a tumultuous private life, marrying five times, most memorably to Orson Welles and Prince Aly Khan (this was before Grace Kelly married her prince!). Her most famous quote (explaining why she married so many times) was "Every man I have ever known has fallen in love with Gilda and awakened with me." She exhibited erratic behavior in her later years because she suffered from early Alzheimer's, which went undiagnosed for quite some time. Rita passed away in 1987 at the age of 68. In those later years, she was cared for by her daughter, Princess Yasmin Khan, who has also been a champion of raising money for Alzheimer's research. She is also best remembered for her roles in
The Lady from Shanghai
, Only Angels Have Wings,
Angels Over Broadway
, Separate Tables, Tales of Manhattan, and many others!

More Info on John Qualen
:
John Qualen was a Canadian-born character actor from the 1930s to the 1970s. He never became a star, but he made 139 movies over a 40 year period, and whenever there was a need for a Swedish character, he surely got the first call! Some of his movies include: The Farmer Takes a Wife,

. He passed away in 1987 at the age of 87.
