    Description

    Active JBL XPL200A Hybrid Speakers
    Four-Channels plus Two-Way Passive Networks
    Dual LE14H-1 Subwoofers
    BX63A Electronic Network
    Ashly Audio XR4001 Electronic Crossover
    ART CleanBox XLR-to-RCA Converter
Please note that the system is offered as a ‘whole’ and VSN will
    NOT
sell a partial like the BX63A or XR4001
Fine craftsmanship is the main priority at VSN where the highest quality of workmanship is of the upmost importance on each task.
I’m an ‘old-school’ engineer focused on details with a passion for vintage JBL systems to dramatically enhance the sound of iconic
loudspeakers including upgrading OEM crossovers, fabricating custom-built convention and charge-coupled networks plus repairing and/or refurbishing transducers on behalf of clients and on eBay
    .
The speakers listed below are neither for “Background Listening” nor for beginners to learn the basics of active networks.
If you have a solid foundation with multi-channel active crossovers, you can recreate recordings with stunning realism and transport the listener to a ‘live’ venue!
Many people think of me as a “Mad Scientist” when it comes to designing custom stereo speakers!
My main considerations for the hybrid system were:
    1) A -3dB frequency response from 26 Hz to 22 kHz
    2) Transducer sensitivity of 92dB/1-W SPL or greater
    3) Transducer power levels at 116db SPL or greater
    4)
An accurate stereo image devoid of cone/dome distortion
    These audiophile speakers can play
    loudly
    and
    and crisply focused details
without burning out, most high-fidelity home loudspeakers can't.
The system is capable of producing enormous volume levels without a trace of strain!
    250Ti versus XPL Hybrid
I’ve evaluated both systems ‘head to head’ and the 250Ti speakers are wonderful in the midst of a B380.
However, in the course of higher sound pressure levels, the differences are obvious for critical listeners.
The XPL hybrid clarity is simply extraordinary and completely effortless by avoiding the losses inherent in the 250Ti full-passive crossovers.
    The XPL Hybrid
    devoured
the Ti’s with superior resolution and lower distortion, winning the debate hands down!
This active-passive JBL Hybrid System can be seven, eight, nine or ten channels.
Following some experimenting, I like seven channels the best
    for the moment....
The stock 240Ti cabinets were heavily modified for the separate subwoofers and woofers while custom-built enclosures were constructed for the original XPL top-end and are mounted as close together as possible, like a single seamless 1 kHz to 20 kHz transducer of the utmost flatness and smoothness
    .
JBL XPL200A speakers had 6.5” mid-bass drivers and were useless for my design concerns, so I picked a brawnier JBL 8” transducer on the 300 Hz – 1 kHz frequencies.
The LE14H-1 transducers are used as a high order subwoofer as a Fosgate Audionics FS400 or much like the B460 and B380.  With the JBL BX63A Electronic Crossover, the subwoofers are flat at 30Hz and beyond with a -3dB at 26Hz.
In My Humble Opinion: I put my preferred setting figures for the system and it has a lot of room to fine tune at your ideal situation.
    Active Settings
    Flat Range
    -3dB Range
    Subwoofers: 65 Hz
    30 Hz -80 Hz {-/+ .3dB}
    26 Hz
    Woofers:    350 Hz
    6
    2 Hz-300 Hz {-/+ .5dB}
    50 Hz-700 Hz
    Mid-Bass:  900 Hz
    350 Hz-900 Hz {-/+ .5dB}
    180 Hz-1.8 kHz
    Midrange:
    900 Hz w/ 4.5 kHz Passive
    Tweeter:
    4.5 kHz-20 kHz
The custom 2-way 12dB octave slope passive crossovers are separate!
Connect the separate 2-way passive networks with two channels or jump together for one channel and still have control on the top end with tweeter attenuation and a phase switch.
The passive network cross-point has a 500 Hz safety point and was constructed with Jensen air gap inductors, Mills non-inductive resistors and Solen metalized polypropylene capacitors with Audiocap Film/Foil by-pass capacitors.
In the Rear: Five sets of heavy duty gold plated 5-way binding posts with a free spinning ferrule provide positive lock-up on 8mm spades or 8awg bare wire and also accept banana plugs.
The System is ‘Ready to Go’ with:
Fresh Damper Pads for the High Frequency Titanium Dome Radiators
Fresh Damper Rings for the Midrange Titanium Dome Transducers
Fresh Foam Surrounds for the Low Frequency and Subwoofer Drivers
